Taking a refreshing dip in a Swedish lake is an essential part of a summer holiday in southern Sweden. The area around Lönsboda is dotted with small and large lakes surrounded by forests, rocks and peaceful villages. Some swimming spots are little more than natural access points to the water, while others offer jetties, playgrounds, barbecue areas and toilets.

Here are our personal recommendations, listed according to their approximate driving time from Lake House Rågeboda.
Gylsboda – a Nearby Natural Swimming Spot by the Railway
Driving time: just a few minutes
The small swimming spot near Gylsboda is our recommendation for a spontaneous dip. It is located very close to Lake House Rågeboda, near the railway line, and has the unspoilt character of a local natural swimming area.
Rather than a large sandy beach or extensive facilities, you will find water, peace and plenty of greenery. On a warm day, it is ideal when you do not want to travel far and simply feel like taking a quick swim.
Best for: a quick dip, quiet time by the water and guests who prefer small local places to large beaches.
Our tip: Combine your swim with a visit to Sliperiet Gylsboda, an active cultural and community venue in the village.
Please note: Gylsboda is not a conventional municipal beach. Pay attention to signs, respect private property and carefully check the access, lakebed and water depth before entering.
Ubbasjön – Small, Peaceful and Surrounded by Forest
Driving time: approximately 10 to 15 minutes
Ubbasjön lies in the forested landscape to the east of Lönsboda. Its small swimming spot is a lovely alternative for anyone looking for peace and quiet away from the area’s better-known beaches.
The lake is surrounded by woodland and belongs to a group of small, tranquil waters in the region. There is little reliably documented visitor infrastructure at the swimming spot, but this is also part of its natural and unspoilt appeal.
Best for: couples, those looking for peace and quiet, and a relaxed swim away from larger beaches.
Our tip: Bring a towel to sit on and consider wearing swimming shoes. The lakebed at small natural swimming areas may be rocky or uneven, depending on the water level.
Hjärtasjön – Lönsboda’s Family-Friendly Swimming Area
Driving time: approximately 15 minutes
Hjärtasjön is the best-known and most fully equipped swimming area close to Lönsboda. The water is shallow near the shore, and the site has jetties, a toilet, barbecue facilities, waste bins and a playground. The car park is only around 50 metres from the water.
Hjärtasjön is therefore suitable not only for a quick swim but also for a longer afternoon with a picnic and time to play beside the lake. There is no kiosk directly at the swimming area, so remember to buy drinks, snacks and anything you would like to barbecue in Lönsboda beforehand.
The approximately three-kilometre trail around the lake is also well worth walking. It follows the water through a characteristically southern Swedish forest landscape.
Best for: families, less confident swimmers under supervision, picnics and combining swimming with a walk.
Our tip: Visit Hjärtasjön in the late afternoon, walk around the lake first and finish with an evening swim.
Breanäs at Lake Immeln – Swimming at One of Skåne’s Great Lakes
Driving time: approximately 15 minutes
Anyone wishing to experience a larger lake and a wide, open waterscape should visit the swimming area at Breanäs. It is situated in the northern part of Lake Immeln, one of the largest lakes in Skåne.
Breanäs is a public swimming area in a beautiful natural setting. It has a grassy area for relaxing, a swimming jetty and a toilet. Its peaceful surroundings and views across Lake Immeln make it a lovely choice for a longer afternoon by the water.
There is also a natural playground beside the swimming area, featuring an obstacle course, balancing equipment, a small climbing pyramid, a roundabout and a swing. This makes Breanäs a good option for families with children.
The water quality at Breanäs is officially monitored during the summer season. Current results are available through Sweden’s official bathing-water information service.
Best for: families, nature lovers, a peaceful half-day by the water and anyone wishing to experience the open scenery of Lake Immeln.
Our tip: Pack a picnic and stay until the late afternoon. With its size, wooded shores and numerous bays, Lake Immeln feels like a small lake district of its own.
Lake Möckeln near Älmhult – Sandy Beaches and a Full Day by the Water
Driving time: approximately 30 minutes
For a longer beach day, the drive to Älmhult is well worth it. There are several public swimming areas around the large Lake Möckeln. Möckelns Badplats is particularly suitable for families.
The swimming area has a fine sandy beach and a gently sloping entrance into the water. There is also a swimming jetty, swings, a playhouse with a slide, a barbecue area and a toilet. Lake Möckeln therefore offers considerably more facilities than the small natural swimming spots around Gylsboda and Lönsboda.
The beach and larger recreation areas make it a good choice for families and anyone planning to spend several hours beside the water.
A swimming trip can also be combined with a visit to Älmhult, perhaps for a traditional Swedish fika, some shopping or a trip to the IKEA Museum.
Best for: families, longer beach days and guests who prefer a sandy beach with more facilities.
Our tip: Spend a few hours at the beach before heading into Älmhult for fika or an early dinner.
An Alternative at Lake Möckeln: Bökhults Badplats
For those looking for a larger swimming area with additional recreational facilities, Bökhults Badplats on the northern edge of Älmhult is another good option.
The swimming area is located next to Sjöstugans Camping and offers both sunny lawns and shady places beneath the trees. Facilities include a jetty, a beach volleyball court, a play structure in the water, an outdoor shower, barbecue facilities and a toilet. The swimming area is also partly accessible for visitors with limited mobility.
Bökhult is usually livelier than the small forest lakes around Lönsboda, but it is particularly suitable for an active day out.
Which Swimming Spot Is Right for You?
For a quick swim very close to the house, we recommend the small natural swimming spot near Gylsboda. Those looking for a peaceful and unspoilt forest setting should try Ubbasjön.
For families and an easy afternoon beside the water, Hjärtasjön is usually the best choice. It offers shallow water, jetties, a playground, toilets and barbecue facilities.
The swimming area at Breanäs is ideal for anyone wishing to combine a larger lake, a scenic grassy shore and a peaceful trip to Lake Immeln.
For a full beach day with sand, play areas and more facilities, it is worth making the trip to Lake Möckeln near Älmhult.
Swimming in Swedish Natural Lakes
Many of the smaller lakes and natural swimming spots in southern Sweden are not supervised or maintained in the same way as swimming pools or large municipal beaches. The lakebed may be rocky, the depth can change quickly and branches or other objects may be present in the water after heavy rain.
Always enter the water slowly at unfamiliar locations. Only jump or dive into the lake when you know the depth and have checked the area beneath the surface. Young children should always be supervised near the water.

A Lakeside Holiday at Lake House Rågeboda
After your swimming trip, return to the peace and quiet of Södra Rågeboda. Lake House Rågeboda is located directly beside the water and offers a private jetty, a terrace overlooking the lake and its own rowing boat.
